A word from Jim Sparrow, President
Welcome to the website of the Retired Teachers of Ontario / Les Enseignantes et Enseignants Retraités de l’Ontario
It is a pleasure to serve as Provincial President of this great organization.
RTO/ERO is a bilingual organization representing over 66,000 retired teachers, administrators and other educational staff in Ontario. It was first organized as the Superannuated Teachers of Ontario and is now entering its 44th year.
A primary focus of RTO/ERO is to advocate on behalf of all members with all levels of government. RTO/ERO also partners with other like-minded groups to promote issues that affect seniors and the community at large.
RTO/ERO is comprised of 48 Districts with 46 Districts in Ontario and 2 Districts in British Columbia. Each District is run by volunteers who sponsor social, recreational and charitable activities. Senate is the governing body of the organization and meets twice a year. It is comprised of 2 representatives from each District, the 7 Provincial Committee Chairs and the 6 members of the Provincial Executive.
RTO/ERO supports many community, national and international projects through the Project - Service to Others program. A $10,000 donation is made each year to a chosen charity. $ 25,000 is awarded in bursaries to students entering Faculties of Education.
The staff members of RTO/ERO are outstanding. Each brings a level of skills and expertise that enhances the organization.
Provincial Workshops are held yearly to assist the Districts in carrying out their activities. The Provincial Executive is ever mindful of the need to continue training to ensure that members feel confident in their District roles.
RTO/ERO offers its members a variety of services and programs including an excellent health and insurance program. Information on these programs can be accessed on the RTO/ERO website. Renaissance, our award winning magazine, is published 4 times a year. Liaison, our newsletter, keeps all District Executives apprised of Provincial activities.
For additional information about our great organization, please browse our website or call our Provincial office. We strive to make a difference for our members. If you are already a member of RTO/ERO consider becoming a District Executive member or a District Committee member, contact your District President.
