Executive Director's Message

I welcome you to the website of The Retired Teachers of Ontario/les enseignantes et enseignants retraités de l'Ontario (RTO/ERO), a bilingual and voluntary organization led and managed by retired members of the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan.

This site is intended both for prospective members of RTO/ERO as well as for the more than 66,000 members who range in age from 52 to 109.

For over 40 years, RTO/ERO has been the only organization for teachers and administrators in retirement with representation from elementary, secondary, public, Catholic, and French and English language schools. We welcome retirees from colleges and universities and support staff from school boards as associate members. Most RTO/ERO members reside in Ontario and are affiliated with one of over 48 Districts that comprise the organization. Included in this number are two Districts in British Columbia.

RTO/ERO is well-known for its comprehensive Health Plans that are competitive and affordable. Owned and managed by its members, RTO/ERO operates the largest Canadian retired educator plans covering 71,000 people. We provide premium rates and benefits that are not age-banded, i.e. you pay the same rate for the same coverage, regardless of your age.

Through this website, learn how RTO/ERO is organized and governed, and the variety of benefits afforded our members. These include:
  • pension information
  • health insurance
  • political advocacy
  • communications
  • wellness activities
  • travel
  • goodwill initiatives.

If you are contemplating retirement, we offer information on what you need to know, whom to contact and when, membership information, and online forms as you prepare to join RTO/ERO on/after your retirement.

If you are already a member, our website also has forms you may need, including change of address and applications for scholarships for your relatives pursuing a teaching career. You can also easily contact management and support staff at the Provincial Office by clicking on the name of the individual with whom you wish to speak.

As a service to our members, we allow free, time-limited listings of job and volunteer opportunities from organizations seeking retired individuals. There are also links to organizations we judge to be of interest to our members, in the areas of health, politics, travel, education, and seniors’ issues.

Our strength is in our numbers, the dynamic engagement of our Districts, and the commitment of our dedicated staff to quality service. We urge you to take an active role at the District or provincial level. Our members do have influence as our size enables RTO/ERO to advocate on educational, environmental, health, pension, social, and seniors issues. With leadership provided by our Senate, Provincial Executive, District/Unit Executives plus countless volunteers, we focus on relevant programs and services for our members. Our healthy financial reserves also ensure that RTO/ERO is "here for you now, here for your future."

Harold Brathwaite,
Executive Director
